thanks for your reply. this is going to be different the next few days. i figure since i was only allowed to use broth for 3 wks, this should be really nice treat. i'll go out this morning to get some protein drinks/powder. when i first had the surgery i use to roller skate for 2 miles three times a wk. i've been rowing & nodric about 15 mins a day, but i will up mins. i do bowling 3 times a wk. so i think i have that down, now just get my pouch where it should be. also i never could get to the doctors support meeting back then. so i'm excited to have this support and happy to watch the veiw!!
thanks, i'm so excited!!!!

Also, the 5dpt is solely protein. You can add veggies on day 6.
Good Luck and Hang in there!

Yes, Tamme, please continue to take your vitamin & supplement cocktail, with a protein shake or meal. This is important to your overall health, energy and also, if you are meeting your nutritional needs with vitamins your body will have fewer cravings or blood sugar swings.
Exercise: Sounds like you have it covered. And yes, please keep up your fitness schedule, or implement a fitness schedule during the 5DPT.
From valmommyt:
Hi valymmoyt! Chili is not the best choice for Days 1 and 2, but in desperate times it can work. Keep in mind the clearer, cleaner the liquid the better chance your pouch has to rest and recover from any eating abuse it may have been experienced to. Kind of like caring for a sick child, you are pampering it for two days so it can get back to doing feeling well. We allow cream soups, or the carb monster soups, for those who are highly addicted to processed carbohydrate slider foods. It seems that these soups reduce the symptoms of carb withdrawal better than clear liquids.
Best to Everyone!!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

You are funny....LOL! You may not want to eat the chicken bean 1 till later in week...only cause you should not eat chicken until day 5...well not like a breast etc...can have canned on day 3...you may want to go back to the 5dpt site and print it off...the 5dpt and journal...I ALWAYS have to go back to it for reference while doing 5dpt....like every day of 5dpt...LOL! Blessings!

Kaye,
What a sweet thing to say! It will be really cool to see how I look once the weight is off. Then we will definitely have to meet in person so we can have a picture together & see just how similar our looks are. Maybe next summer...if we get to go to Colorado on vacation as planned.

It appears to me that you're doing everything you can to avoid following the program the way it is written.
*tomato soup
*chili
*homemade soup - your own recipe
*chicken soup - your own recipe
I can't see that you're actually following the 5dpt except that you've incorporated soups into your diet.
It's a 5 day program. That's it. If you truly want to do this, stop messing with it. The recipes provided have been proven. You're substituting whatever you want. Why tempt fate? Stop arguing with the recipes (yes, there are ham cubes) and trying to use that to justify your own recipes (anyway, I'm pureeing...). Consider it a bonus that there is ham...not the option for you to eat chicken.
The 5 dpt "is what it is." You can't mess with it from the beginning and expect it to work. We've gained back weight because we kept "testing the rules" and pushing our boundaries. The goal of the 5dpt is to get back to the rules and to stop messing with them. By following the 5dpt the way it is, you can get yourself back on track, but you've got to stop playing with it. As they say in Nike, "just do it!"
I hope this didn't sound too harsh, but I really think it needed to be put out there as you might not realize you're doing it (as we often don't until after the fact).

Thanks for that last post. I was concerned, but didn't feel like I am in a place to say anything, being so newly post-op. I don't think you were harsh. Having read all of your posts, I see you as an honest person who cares a lot for the people in this wonderful neighborhood. It is hard to tell it like it is; it makes us vulnerable. You did good!!! Now, let's go find that post where the person said she only drank 2 cups of water the whole day!
Val,
I hope you will realize that Toris is looking at your best interest. I, too, felt concerned that you weren't really following the plan. I know that it is hard to make changes, but it is only 5 days out of your life. And, if something isn't really up to your tastes, again, it is only 5 days out of your life. It may mean the difference between keeping the weight on and getting healthier. You may save many more days in your life than the 5 days you have to put up with the rules and some stuff you don't really like the taste of. Best wishes for getting on the plan and back in touch with your tool.

I'm glad you are trying to make improvements in your eating. Let's face it, any move toward a healthier lifestyle is good.
Seeing why you are adapting the 5DPT to what you have makes more sense now. I totally understand the money issue. Our budget is tight, too. After the first 2 days it may be easier to follow because it will be closer to what you can feed the family and may have on hand.
Hang in there and keep trying. If necessary, do it again after a paycheck and you can plan to feed the family some of the things you are going to be eating. I've read that a lot of the families have enjoyed the pumpkin sausage soup right along with their 5DPT person.
Once you are done, you can plan meals that are healthier for the family and also fit into your WLS lifestyle. I'm learning to do that with my family.

If you don't have a lot of money (or much for that matter), I highly recommend the Lentil/Barley soup. The only expensive thing on it (if you don't have it in your cabinet) is the spices. That being said, you don't HAVE to use those spices, you could substitute whatever spices you like (just keep the main ingredients the same). The lentils and barley cost about $1.50 total (and I've been able to make 3 batches with those). If canned broth is too expensive, buy the cubes - they're a little higher in salt, so just make sure to drink a lot of water to flush it out of your system. Better yet, you can make the broth with the chicken you're going to be eating on day 4. The other cheap soup I made was the split pea and ham. I recall seeing a black bean soup and I'm guessing that might be cheap too. Heck anything made with dried beans is going to be pretty cheap.
I'll admit I was apprehensive about the recipes, but gave it a shot and actually really like it. It makes more than enough for the 2 days so you can keep eating it - or let your family have some! :o) I made one of the soups for dinner when our kids were home (I have 4 grown step kids). They had no idea they were eating 5dpt food - and I wasn't about to tell them. I just ate my soup quietly while they commented on how yummy it was. *evil grin*
Hang in there and remember - when you're doing the 5dpt and even after, you'll be eating less, as well as less processed and slider foods, thus your grocery bill should end up less regardless.

On the night that I made Split Pea and Ham soup...I only needed a small amount of the ham steak and carrots to add to the soup, so I made the rest of the ham steak for the family, with a side of steamed carrots (and then cooked up some rice for them on the side). I didn't have to buy extra ingredients and I had 2 completely separate meals using some of the same ingredients.
I hope this helps!
